If I Had a Million Dollars
高三乙 覃昭彤
Many people have the dream of becoming rich. However, if we had a million dollars, how would we
use it? Instead of splurging, I believe it would be wiser if we made plans on how to spend the money
beforehand. If I had a million dollars, I would split the money into two portions to use.
The first portion would be used to go traveling abroad with my family. Traveling has always been
something my family enjoys tremendously since it is not only a time for relaxing, but also a time for us
to create precious memories. However, my family is not very wealthy; thus, we usually travel to local
destinations instead of overseas. Hence, if I had the money, I would use it to take my family to places
such as London, Kyoto, and Copenhagen so that we could experience exotic cultures.
The other part would be used to construct a library to store all of my books. From a young age, I
have loved to immerse myself in books; therefore, when, most girls are buying bags and accessories,
I can be seen in the bookstore purchasing another novel that has caught my eye. Due to this reason,
stacks of books are piled up in my room and the space for putting new ones is gradually decreasing.
Thus, my mother often limits the number of books I can buy or makes me donate the old ones.
Nevertheless, it is difficult for me to part with my books. Hence, if I had a library of my own, I would
not need to worry about the space for storing new books.
It is everyone’s wish to own such an enormous amount of money, but it is impossible for money to
fall from the sky. In other words, no pain, no gain. If I ever want the dreams I stated above to come
true, I will have to work hard and earn them.
A Letter to a Friend
Dear Mason, 高三乙 鍾政廷
I was horrified when I saw that an earthquake and tsunami on March 11 had destroyed the north-
east part of Honshu. I remember a few months ago when you waved goodbye to me at Taoyuan
International Airport and started your exchange student life in Japan. I assumed you would have a
great time in Japan, since you like their culture so much and wanted to experience it by yourself. I
would have never thought this kind of tragedy would happen in Japan.
After the tragedy, I tried so many times to get in contact with you, but I just couldn’t get through.
I couldn’t sleep until I successfully made contact with you. It was great to hear your voice again and to
know you are still in one piece. By the way, I heard that there are some supply shortages in Japan. If
you need anything, please let me know immediately. I’ll send it to you in Japan as soon as possible.
I wish I could be with you at this very moment, in order to help you get through all those
difficulties in person. Hope to hear from you very soon!
Your friend,
Daniel
