Afterthought of Reading Call It Courage
高二庚 綦家承
Every person has his or her weaknesses. We are all afraid of something. The fear may bring some
inconveniences to our lives, or even trouble. Then, do we know how to overcome fear? Do we have the
courage?
Although living on an island where people live by fishing, Mafatu is a boy who was afraid of the sea,
for he had encountered a disaster that claimed his mother’s life when he was little. Since then, Mafatu
had believed that he was the next to be claimed by Moana, the Sea God. Having been laughed at by the
tribespeople because of his fear, the young boy finally made up his mind to go on a journey to the sea on
his own. After facing the storm in a small wooden raft, he settled on an isolated, and went through many
dangerous and exciting adventures. At last, he made it back to the island where he had grown up. The
whole tribe cheered for him, for Mafatu was no longer the boy who was afraid of the sea. He had beaten

台普 After reading this story, it dawned on me that I have a fear that I have been living with, too. The fear
文
is that I cannot swim. I am really scared of the feeling of floating on the water. It makes me feel so
字 insecure. I am scared that I can’t get up on my feet in the middle of the pool. This reason may sound
館 funny. However, I am also puzzled by why I have this fear. It just feels strange when I cannot touch
something steady like the floor and the walls. This fear really troubles me, and it is one of my biggest
goals to conquer my fear. In fact, I have tried and there was once that I could float for a short distance,
but after months when I didn’t go swimming, the fear came back. After reading this book, I know how to
beat my fear—just face it! The best way to overcome something is to face it directly;put yourself in the
fear, and you will adapt to the feelings. How simple! I hope I can learn swimming this summer. I will not
let my fear bother me anymore.
Although somehow I know how to do something, actions always speak louder than words. The only
way to success is “execution.” Nothing is going to happen unless you do something. If you have the plan,
you need execution to make it real. To get an A, you need to study hard first. To master a sport, you need
to start practicing it. The trophy of success is lying there. All we need is to get up and do something that
takes us to our dream.
This is a good book that I enjoyed a lot. Though there are many new words to me, I understand the
story overall. I realized that reading an English novel is not very hard, and it helps me improve my English
skills in a fun way. After reading this book, I am more willing to read other English novels. I have bought
two English books recently, and one of them is “The Hunger Games.” It is a thick book and it may take a
long time to finish it. There may be more new words and some complex story plot, but now, I have the
courage to start the reading!
