My Best Learning Experience
國三辛 高詮賀
Learning can be fun and enjoyable. However, it can be challenging and frustrating sometimes. After
years of immersing myself in learning geography, I have realized that frustration is the best thing to
inspire me to advance my abilities and knowledge.
Since the beginning of 8th grade, I have been attending the Olympiad training course. I was
fond of studying about the earth when I was little. I read a lot of books and atlas about mountain
ranges, rivers, countries, and their flags. During those years, I had learnt a lot about the geographic
information, such as the process of glacier movement and erosion, layers of the Earth’s atmosphere,
the cosmos, politics, religions, and cultural rituals. I am interested in geographic knowledge. It
attracted me when I first saw the geological features taught in class. Currently our class is learning
about human geography, which fascinates me so much.
Although the lectures on geography are quite interesting and fun, almost all of the class, including
me, sometimes have a hard time perceiving and understanding the concepts taught in class. For
example, I was quite confused by the idea of the Köppen climate classification right before the
competition of the International Geography Bee. The competition was to start in July in Berlin, and that
means I had very limited time to improve my understanding of the the Köppen system. What’s worse,
I learned later that the the Köppen system was just one of the most important ideas included in the
competition. There was much more to learn for those who participated in it. Although I was ranked
37th out of 52 participants at the end of the competition, I felt thankful and grateful for what the
experience had taught me.
After the International Geography Bee, I joined the new course for the Linguistic Olympiad.I was
so excited before the first lecture began. The linguistic concepts, like “middle voice”, “morphemes,” and
“allomorph”, inspired my passion for linguistics just like how the geography course had made me feel a
few years ago. The only difference is the linguistics lectures seem to be more amusing to me although
there are difficult parts to understand.
I enjoy learning because it helps me discover my talents and helps me become a better learner.
Last year I won the gold medal at the 2018 Taiwan National Geographic Championship, and that was a
great expericence. I am looking forward to participating in more competitions in the future because I
know I will always learn something new and unexpected from them.
