The Worst Typhoon I Have Ever Experienced
高二乙 張哲榮
There are several typhoons hitting Taiwan every year during summer and fall. Some of them were
small and only caused heavy rain. But some of them were very strong and caused flood, mudslide or took
away lives. The typhoon, Morakot, was the worst typhoon I have ever experienced.
Typhoon Morakot hit Taiwan in 2010. With the flood and mudslide, it caused many people to be
homeless and even claimed hundreds of lives. The worst hit area was Shao-lin village in southern Taiwan,
where rockslide, mudslide and flood buried the whole village alive. Fortunately, my home is in Taichung.
Only some heavy rain and a small flood occurred. But the typhoon still scared me and my family.
When the typhoon hit Taiwan, we shut down all the doors and windows to keep out the roaring wind.
The wind was very strong and the windows were shaking and making big noises. On the road, a large
amount of water came out from the drain pipes, and cars driving on the road looked like “boats” sailing in
the river. Trees outside our house were shaking so heavily, some of which even were crashed by the wind.
We stayed inside our house and hoped the typhoon to go away soon.
After this experience, I never feel careless when hearing the alert for the coming of typhoons. The
power of nature is never to be underestimated.
My Favorite Movie
高二庚 朱雅妤
The most impressive movie to me is “Before the Flood.” It’s a documentary produced by BBC. The
documentary shows how climate and natural environment have changed with the development of
technology. It conveys a crucial message to the public that all of us should take action to protect our
ailing planet. The Oscar’s best actor in 2015, Leonardo Dicaprio, also the climate ambassador of the
United Nations, starred in the documentary. In the movie, Leonardo visited many places. Some are totally
primitive, while others are seriously destroyed by humans. So far, the documentary has brought the
attention of the public ; more and more people are starting to get at the problem of climate change.
After watching this movie, I was amazed by how different our earth was before the technology
progressed. Two scenes impressed me the most. One is a large area of gasoline well farm, which was once
a magnificent mountain. However, people used bombs to change the landscape for the resources they
wanted. Therefore, the area became dirty and covered with dusty air. The bleak and polluted scene has
made me feel upset. The other scene is shot in the North Pole, where the purest water resources exist.
When I saw the scene, I was speechless. How pure North Pole is! That is exactly how the whole world
would look like before human activities marred it. Not until that moment did I realize I, as a human being,
do not need so much technology. I prefer to live a simple life like my ancestors did. What I saw in the
documentary has surely left a strong impression on me.
