當然，詩歌不會只是用來包裝人間苦難。有次上課，為了要鼓舞被學測壓得喘不過氣來的學生，我就為他們介
紹了朗費羅 (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) 的 < 生命的禮讚 >，藉由詩人雄渾的文字，激勵學生當下要努力活、認
真過，來日回首時才能自豪地看著自己深深烙下的生命足跡。課後，我翻譯了其中我最喜歡的三段如下：

Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant! 別相信命運，不管它多美！
Let the dead Past bury its dead! 讓過去埋葬過去！

Act,— act in the living Present! 行動─行動在活生生的當下！
Heart within, and God o’erhead! 胸中有真心，頭頂有神明！

Lives of great men all remind us 偉人的生命提醒我們
We can make our lives sublime, 我們可以使生命崇高，

And, departing, leave behind us 而當離開時，於我們身後
Footprints on the sands of time; 留下時間沙灘上的足跡；

Footprints, that perhaps another, 航行於神聖生命之海的
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main, 另一旅者，遇難孤單的兄弟，

A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, 來日或能見此足跡，
Seeing, shall take heart again. 而因此再鼓起勇氣。

很巧合地，這學期剛好有因緣帶幾個學生做中英翻譯的練習，由於學生的程度不錯，所以一開始就要他們練習
帶格律與韻腳的詩歌。練習過程中，學生常覺得翻譯時還得注意格律與韻腳，真的是綁手綁腳，難以施展。但過一
段時間，他們逐漸抓到竅門，也能用自己的中英文表現出原作的韻味。以下是我們練習的作品，翻譯的部分是我跟
學生討論後所得到的靈感：

Look at my knees, 瞧瞧我的雙膝，
That island rising from the steamy seas! 如小島自蒸氣般的海面升起！
The candle’s a tall lightship; my two hands 蠟燭是高高的燈船；我的雙手
Are boats and barges anchored to the sands, 是下錨的船舶，在沙岸旁停留，
With mighty cliffs all round; 四周的峭壁巨大雄偉；
They’re full of wine and riches from far lands.... 滿艙盡是遠方的財富與美酒…
I wonder what it feels like to be drowned? 我好奇溺水究竟是什麼滋味？
I can make caves, 我能創造深穴，
By lifting up the island and huge waves 只要抬起小島，再讓風浪肆虐，
And storms, and then with head and ears well under 然後將頭與耳好好埋入水中，
Blow bubbles with a monstrous roar like thunder, 吹出泡泡並發出雷聲般巨吼，
A bull-of-Bashan sound. 如田單火牛，震天發威。[ 註 ]
The seas run high and the boats split asunder.... 舟船應聲而散，海水狂奔騰空…
