Incredible Much?? TaiMUN IX
高一辛 葉宣彣
“Okay, now if you guys don’t have any more questions, then let’s get started, shall we? Oh, and
guys, keep in mind the deadlines.” I had one thought streaming through my mind, “Uh…what, what, and
what?!” Needless to say, I was nervous and totally confused, but hey, give me break; after all, it was my
first MUN conference.
Instead of participating as a delegate in the IX TaiMUN Conference at American School in Taichung, I
applied for a position on the press team. Luckily, my application was accepted and I was assigned a job as
a reporter. Walking into the press room on the first day sure was nerve-racking. However, all it took was a
couple of hours and the press office was stirring with commotion, both professionally and socially.
Overall, the TaiMUN Times was producing three editions of the newspaper--one pre-conference,
another during-conference, and the last post-conference. In all, I was assigned to report one and write
five articles. The first one, which was a biography on the secretary general of the conference, was quite
simple compared to the others. I was allowed about two weeks time to get to know the person I was to
be writing about and then e-mail the draft to the editor. On the other hand though, the other four articles
were not as simple to complete. I had about six hours at most to obtain all the information I needed,
including interviewing some delegates, then combining all the quotes and remarks together, and lastly,
emailing my final draft to my editor. Now, that may seem like ample of time, but trust me, that’s what I
thought too, until I was facing the real deal.
Despite the excessive work and bustling schedule, I really had a fantastic time at TaiMUN. It was one
of those one in a lifetime experiences that just opened another door. My attention was drawn to all the
issues our world is currently facing. I’m not going to lie; I had to do so much extra research to understand
the topics being debated. Yet, all that hard work and extra time was definitely worth it. Now, I’m more
alert as to what is going on in the world and more concerned with international problems, because these
issues truly have everything to do with us and our daily lives. I mean, we’re all a tiny part of this great big
world, aren’t we?
Besides that, I also befriended many talented and sophisticated people from schools all over Taiwan.
My conversations with my new friends were so in-depth and meaningful. We were actually talking about
something; in other words, there was actually a point in our chatter, as opposed to random pointless talk.
My comrades were people who knew how to behave and mind process in a mature manner and also have
fun as well. It was truly a pleasure meeting and working with them.
This is inevitably not my last MUN conference as I look forward to taking my involvement
internationally as well. As the saying goes, “no sweet without sweat.” Yes, there was much effort put in,
yet the experiences gained and the friends made were priceless.
