A Recent News That Affected Me the most

It was a beautiful night when I saw the shocking 高
news. A minor named Liao assassinated a gang
leader. “Taiwan’s education made me do this.” That
was the first sentence he said to the police when he
was arrested. I saw my mother frown.“These kids,
all they do is blame other people when they make
mistakes,” she sighed. On the other hand, shouldn’t
he have the right to voice his option? The news got
me thinking, and this left a great impact on my life.

Liao’s parents were divorced when he was little.
His father was a drug dealer whose normal routine
was getting in and out of jail. Liao lived with his 90
year-old grandmother, who had no energy to worry
about her teenage grandson. At school, he never had
a passing grade; no doubt, all his teachers blamed
him for not studying hard enough. Liao claimed that
all the teachers gave up on him because they thought
he was hopelessly dumb. No one ever tried to teach
him the difference between what is right and what is
wrong; he was simply abandoned by the world. These
were the reasons that Liao walked onto the wrong
path that would soon ruin his life.

I do sympathize with Liao, believing that people
shouldn’t just blame him on being rebellious and
mischievous. The society should look beyond this

situation and see what caused him to become a murderer. Liao’s parents and teachers should also take some responsibility
for his action.

It is true that our education system only cares about the smart and intelligent students; it is also true that some teachers
never actually try to find the true value of education. Most importantly, our education does not teach us how to be a
decent human being. As a Taiwanese student and a child from a single parent family, I understand what Liao’s situation is
like. However, his unlawful behavior made realize me the importance of being independent.

Liao did teach me an extremely important lesson. He taught me to be independent and maintain self-control. We are
players on the stage of our own life, and change our plots if we don’t like them. No one has the right to take over our life.

If Liao had become independent and had worked
harder under his existing situation, he might have
overcome the obstacles. The advantage of being
abandoned is that you have no one else to rely on
except yourself. I always remember my grandfather’s
favorite quote: “Even if you are abandoned by the
whole world, you still have yourself”. If Liao viewed
his life in a different way and changed it for a better
life, he may never have committed such a serious
crime.

Liao’s tragic story left this great impression in my 高一辛 盧筠婷
mind. “You should learn from others’ mistakes.”
I believe his mistake has taught many people an
enormous lesson, including me. I am glad that I
study in a school teaching morality that guides my
path into adulthood, and where the teachers treat
their students as their own children. In addition,
I am glad that I was born in a family that is full of
love. Therefore, I sincerely wish people whose
situations are like Liao’s will find their happiness in
life instead of taking the same path as Liao.
