Crisis Under Prosperity-- Analysis of Innovation in China
I. Introduction
In 2014, China proposed the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to the world in the name of
cross-border economic collaboration, wishing to connect countries with a mutually beneficial
economic partnership. One of the primary missions of the BRI is industrial transformation,
which becomes the primary challenge for not only traditional manufacturing industries but also
relatively new emerging industries such as the ICT industry. As a core value of industrial
transformation, innovation becomes an enterprise spirit for most companies. Perceiving slogans
of innovation one after another, I am skeptical whether these companies are really innovative
as they allege to be. Therefore, I join the Belt and Road Initiative research project in my school
to explore more about the innovation in China. With the evidence found in the field of study in
Shenzhen and Hong Kong as well as a-year-long research, this research paper will focus on
China’s innovation and further analyze the challenges and opportunities faced by China’s
innovation race.
Wishing to explore innovation in China profoundly, I determined to employ an on-site
investigation as I can gain firsthand data. During the field trip, I visited Tencent, a tycoon in the
Chinese information technology industry in Shenzhen, and Expeditors, a global logistics and
freight forwarding company in Hong Kong. In addition, in order to ensure the credibility of the
information, I was honored to have an interview with Davis Lin, the vice president of Tencent,
and the representative of Expeditors in Hong Kong. These special meetings along with present
papers will be the critical evidence for my research.
